We Will Get to Learn a Lot From Anil Kumble, Says Murali Vijay

India opening batsman Murali Vijay is a big fan of newly appointed head coach Anil Kumble and says the players have got a golden opportunity to learn from the great leg-spinner.
"My first Test match was his last Test match and actually I did not spend lot of time with him, but I have been a great fan of him as an youngster," he told reporters on the second day of the India camp at the KSCA stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday."
It is a great opportunity for youngsters to talk to him about cricket and learn from him and move forward. So it will be a great time for us," the opening batsman said further.
Asked what he makes out of Kumble-Virat Kohli combination, Vijay said it would be early to make such a comment but expects to have great 12 months ahead for Indian cricket.
"I can't talk anything ahead of time. It will be too early to comment on that, but it is going to be great 12 months for us as a team - that much I can guarantee you. We are going to be up for it and we just want to be best in coming 12 months," he said.
Replying to a query, Vijay said the team had a great time with Ravi Shastri when he was Team Director and the players are certain to learn many tricks from Kumble.
"We had a great time with Ravi Bhai, and Anil Bhai has picked up for now, and hopefully we can have good time with him and learn lot of things from him. He has been an unbelievable cricketer for India," he said.
Hopeful of staying fit
On his individual preparation, Vijay said he would make sure he gets his basics right and show consistency in batting.
"I have been to the West Indies three times before and I have a fair bit of idea of how it is going to be there ... I am looking forward to stick to my basics and be as consistent as possible, hopefully, and if I can do that I will be happy at the end of it," he said.
However, the team has to be prepared for any eventuality and playing conditions the West Indies offers them during the tour, Vijay added.
Talking about remaining fit for the next 17 matches in one year, Vijay said players are following a fitness regime and are hopeful of remaining fit throughout the season.
"Definitely it (fitness) will play a major part on each and everybody. We are aware of it. We have our fitness regime and we are following and hopefully we can stay fit throughout the season," he said.

Shastri should have been present in person for his interview: Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly, one of the members of Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) advisory committee, has retorted to Ravi Shastri's criticism by noting that the former director of Indian cricket was 'living in a fool's paradise,' if he believed that one representative of the panel was responsible for him not taking over the mantle of coaching the national set-up. Shastri was overlooked in favour of Anil Kumble for the post of India's head coach by the panel, consisting of VVS Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar and Ganguly.
"If Shastri believes that I am responsible for him not being the coach, then he is mistaken. To imagine that I am responsible for him not being coach is living in a fool's paradise. There were far bigger names in the committee than Sourav Ganguly," Ganguly said on Wednesday (June 29).
Shastri had earlier expressed his disappointment by stating that Ganguly was absent at the time of his meeting. "If he was present, he would have asked some questions. I wish he was there," the former Indian all-rounder was quoted as saying by the Mumbai Mirror.
Ganguly, who is also the president of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), had to address a working committee meeting of the state board and was hence, unavailable during Shastri's video conference interview. On his part, Ganguly said that he couldn't ignore Shastri's barbs anymore and slammed the former national skipper for his statements.
"Be present for meetings in person. He should not have been holidaying in Bangkok when another former cricketer gave an hour-long presentation. I have seen that (Shastri's interview) on TV and I was reading about it in the newspapers.
"Thought I would not react to it but it just went on and on. I will make available the emails and contacts I made with the BCCI. He does not know the full facts of the event. I'm deeply saddened and disappointed with his remarks," Ganguly summed up.

Have never been as fit as I am today

India's Test captain Virat Kohli has said that his outlook towards fitness changed after IPL 2012, and a healthier body has not only made him a better batsman but also an improved fielder.

"Till IPL 2012, I did not focus much on the physical aspect," he said at a promotional event in Delhi. "I never got into the minute details of fitness, things like what I need to eat from morning to night, how much I need to work out and how much I need to train.

After that IPL, I started listening to my body. I made a lifestyle choice. I wanted to explore a new side of my body to take me to the next level because I never wanted to be average. I wanted to best in the world. So I always had that mindset but never had the physical ability."

Kohli cited an example of how improved fitness helped allay fielding apprehensions. "When you become fit, you feel you can do anything," he said. "I will give you one example.

I was never a quick fielder. I was never willing to field in every position. But after becoming fitter, lighter and stronger, I overcame all those doubts I had [about fielding]. Now it [staying fit, eating right] has become second nature to me."
